I know this place has been visited by everyone, this was our second visit to the mine. The first time, we walked straight to the Hopton end and back, and this time we took a right hand path into the mine, and found a different section to the last time. Visited with SophieJayne and some other friends - It's a good explore, as I love underground, but it just feels a bit bare, and the place is huge.. really difficult to light with a couple of £30 lensers!
Middleton has an extensive mining history, with Middleton Mine opening for limestone quarrying in 1959, although the mine also dug aggregates and finer grade stone for use in other industries, such as sugar refinery. The mine closed during the early 2000's and from what we saw last visit, the speculations of re opening may not just be a thought... we saw a van and 2 diggers down there, which had left fresh tyre tracks all around the mine. On with the pics and please forgive my photgraphy - this was my first time taking the camera somewhere dark, I was taught (thankyou Sophie) to use manual mode and manual focus... I need to get my focusing skills and exposure better
