Middleton has an extensive history in the lead mining and quarrying industries, of which my family had some involvement in the early 1900s. Middleton Limestone Mine was established in 1959 and closed in the early 2000s. There's been speculation about reopening the mine, however as far as I know nothing has happened.
I didn't mind it, felt apart from the impressive scale there wasn't really much to it.
