While in the area we popped into this place, not too much left and no access to the underground but a good little wander that killed a couple of hours.

History

Copenacre Quarry was purchased by the MOD in 1940 and, following an urgent request for underground storage in 1941, made available to the Navy.

The estimated cost to convert the quarry was £192,500, but the Navy demanded the best of everything and within weeks costs had exceeded the agreed budget.

In 1972 it was announced that Copenacre was to close, but with a staff of 1,700 this raised concerns. Following a Public Enquiry the depot was retained indefinitely.

However, Copenacre closed in 1995 and was sold off in 1997.

The latest development plans I can find for the site is here:

From November 2012 - permission granted for a care home, a hotel, up to 84 homes and office space. Surely they should be demolishing it by now? This is prime land right beside the busy A4.

May be wrong here, but no chance of ever going underground here again. I am informed that Hansons backfilled it with surplus waste rock from their other sites

They have, but only up to a point. You can still walk round the place, but it's not anywhere near as impressive as it used to be.

Be careful here!
I drive past this site most days. Both today and yesterday there has been police vans parked inside the site. What they doing I do not know, but I'm sure I would had noticed if there were police vans inside this site prior to this week. Wondering if it's an response by the authorities to this thread.

Great stuff, it looks fairly decent with some nice bits and pieces.

I really need to get down to this part of the country some time soon.

Seems to be a lot going on in that area at the moment with one thing or another.

It won't be. It'll be training or an exercise. The police wouldn't be there for two days even if someone was killed there, yet alone just walked through an open door.
