The Explore

After my last report – Birkenhead Town Railway Station & Tunnels, a report based on the original station site and inside
the first of the two tunnels at platform level, the Woodside Tunnel, a second visit was planned with a non member to find a
way into the 2nd of the tunnels known locally as the Monks Tunnels which lead to the old monks ferry freight depot.

So torch and camera batteries fully charged and kitted up off we went. On approach to entrance site it was clear the council
had been in kitted up with numerous cans of thick black vandal grease to stop access into the Woodside tunnel, although
unfortunate, the monks tunnels hadn’t been touched by dirty hands so after a bit of searching and climbing we were successful
in finding a way in…

I Hope you enjoy the report.

A Quick history

Closed in the 1960’s, tunnels sealed and station demolished in the 70’s, Birkenhead town Railway station and its two tunnels
both bore passenger and freight trains from London & Wales. A railway history spanning nearly 100 years lies benith the area
which is now the entrance and approach roads to the Queensway tunnel.
