First opening its doors in 1828, the James Murray Lunatic Asylum is an astounding building. Over the decades, the asylum was expanded as it succeeded as an establishment. In 1948 it became part of the NHS, however by the 80s, such a large building was no longer needed and it slowly went into decline. In 2012 a modern hospital facility opened on the grounds, making the original building redundant. In 2020, plans for converting the building for residential use was approved and now scaffolding is up meaning work will commence soon on this truly beautiful but slightly haunting building
The explore was great, I'd really wanted to see the library, theatre and central atrium for myself as they just looked beautiful to me. Entrance has been made a bit easier (in my opinion) with the scaffolding acting as ladders. Halfway through I heard scrabbling about and nearly s**t myself haha! Turns out it was a family scrambling through a window, had a good laugh about it and they went off on their way too. Fantastic day out all in all!
