This was built on the Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway, opened in 1864 and absorbed into the Caledonian Railway Company three years later. The tunnel is 537 yards long, single track and is 18 feet high by 17 1/4 feet wide. All but 8 yards is lined with 18 inches of brickwork and both portals are finished in ashlar (fine dressed stone).
The railway finally closed in 1954, the final use being to haul timber out of a nearby estate. Both the tunnel and the viaduct over the river Tweed next to it, are Grade B Listed by Scottish Heritage.
Visited with Mrs Bovine, who insisted on going shopping afterwards!

Inside was a short heading, unlined and collapsed

Straight, except for a curve just before the East end, so you can't see through it!

Remains of a chipping bin, these were used to pack under sleepers
