The History

New Scotland Yard is the nickname for the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service, the territorial police force responsible for policing most of London.

The name derives from the location of the original Metropolitan Police headquarters at 4 Whitehall Place, which had a rear entrance on a street called Great Scotland Yard. The Scotland Yard entrance became the public entrance to the police station, and over time the street and the Metropolitan Police became synonymous. The New York Times wrote in 1964 that just as Wall Street gave its name to New York's financial district, Scotland Yard became the name for police activity in London.

The force moved away from Great Scotland Yard in 1890, and the name New Scotland Yard was adopted for the subsequent headquarters. The current New Scotland Yard is located on Broadway in Victoria and has been the Metropolitan Police's headquarters since 1967.

By the 1960s the requirements of modern technology and further increases in the size of the force meant that it had outgrown its Victoria Embankment site. In 1967 New Scotland Yard moved to the present building on Broadway, which was an existing office block acquired under a long-term lease; the first New Scotland Yard is now partly used as the base for the Met's Territorial Support Group.

The Met's senior management team, who oversee the service, was based at New Scotland Yard at 10 Broadway, close to St. James's Park station, along with the Met's crime database. This uses a national computer system developed for major crime enquiries by all British forces, called Home Office Large Major Enquiry System, more commonly referred to by the acronym HOLMES, which recognises the great fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. The training programme is called 'Elementary', after Holmes's well-known, yet apocryphal, phrase "elementary, my dear Watson". Administrative functions are based at the Empress State Building, and communication handling at the three Metcall complexes, rather than at Scotland Yard.

A number of security measures were added to the exterior of New Scotland Yard during the 2000s, including concrete barriers in front of ground-level windows as a countermeasure against car bombing, a concrete wall around the entrance to the building, and a covered walkway from the street to the entrance into the building. Armed officers from the Diplomatic Protection Group patrol the exterior of the building along with security staff.

The Metropolitan Police Authority bought the freehold of the building for around £120 million in 2008.

In May 2013 the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the New Scotland Yard building on Broadway will be sold and the force's headquarters will be moved back to the Curtis Green Building on the Victoria Embankment, which will be renamed Scotland Yard. A competition was announced for architects to redesign the building prior to the Metropolitan Police moving to it. This building currently houses the Territorial Policing headquarters and is adjacent to the original "Scotland Yard" (Norman Shaw North Building).

Ahead of the move to the Embankment, the Metropolitan Police sold New Scotland Yard to Abu Dhabi Financial Group in December 2014 for £370 million.

The last Metropolitan Police officer left New Scotland Yard on the 31st of October this year.

The Explore

Well, like many of you I guess, we were buzzing when we heard that the Metropolitan police had finally moved out of here.

We spent a few hours researching the place, its location, what was around it and finally what the fuck we would do if we managed it and got busted…….

Well we chose out day well, while the rest of the world wad glued to the TV watching the Trump/Clinton/American fiasco, a car load of what I can only describe as childish immature idiots was departing from darkest Essex and heading towards London, not Scotland as may have been mentioned during the research……

I don’t need to name names, you know our normal crowd, so we were all a little jovial and arsing around on the way there until we hit London, then shit kinda got serious.

After texting a few other explorers and finding nobody else was about to join us we found ourselves doing a lap of NSY in the car before parking up down a side street and watching our prey through the pouring rain.

We had already clocked the security booth and our potential access point, problem being these were less than 100 yards apart, so we knew it would be tricky.

We sent two of our group of idiots off to have a closer look. How did we pick who was going you may ask, well there was no shortest straw, no rock paper scissors. No we just sent the two drunkest ones to get our info.

So like lambs to the slaughter off they headed….

After what seemed like ages we received a message saying “ yo be patient “

Hmmm more waiting, had they been busted or had they simply run out of beer.

Neither actually, they had got into the grounds and the rest of us followed.

Now this is where it got interesting.

Once over the fence we pretty much walked in ……

So that was it, we were inside and found the stairs to the roof, well it is London and roof topping is where it’s at. Once we made it to the roof the views where amazing as far as to say we considered it to be one of the best roof tops in London.

So there we are sat on the roof in the rain snapping pictures and getting wet.

So what now?

Two of our group appeared to be “missing”

Oh no my mistake, there they are……

Well after this we went back inside and dried off a bit before continuing to explore the building

Sadly the building is pretty much naked inside and has had a very very heavy strip so there isn’t all that much to see.

We had a few hours wandering aimlessly to see what was left and just as we had decided to leave bumped into a lone ( read brave ) security guy.

“Fuck”

So while the world was panicking about some orange bloke become world leader we were in New Scotland Yard having a laugh and doing what we do….

Enjoy the pics, Sorry there are no real goodies to see.
