This is the downstream section of the Carr Brook, outfalling in to the River Don at the Brightside Weir.

Me and @tarkovsky had explored the upstream section this time last year (http://3soteric3ric.blogspot.com/2017/11/carr-brook-sheffield.html), previously covered on here by @WB. The end of this section featured a grille which we foolishly left without close examination.

Fast forward a year and @tallginge and tarky returned for a closer look, finding a way in. All three of us then later returned with high hopes, but alas it had been raining heavily and we couldn't venture further than a couple 100m.

A final visit found us making it to the end, although this one left more questions than answers, in our quest to conquer Sheffield's underground we emerged somewhere completely different to where we had expected, leaving the mystery to be completed another day.

Nice! I was chatting with @tarkovsky last night about the unexpected outfall location. That just leaves more questions about the other outfall further downstream...

Nice pics! I’ll get some words and pictures up of this and the earlier bit soon.

Yeah, like you say, the other outfall is definitely featured on older maps as the outfall of Carr Brook. Seems the most likely explanation is that it was rediverted at a later date... that other outfall is definitely older and the maps show that section culverted earlier than this section. You’ll remember too that the other outfall, other than the sitting water in the entrance, had almost no flow where as Carr Brook is fairly fast - suggesting that the other outfall just picks up some rainwater runoff or is possibly now just used as a sewer overflow...

It must have been diverted at some point since on the maps from the early 1900s Car brook is seen as following Attercliffe Common towards the 'old' outfall.

Crackin pics dude and good times down there - tunes, ciderz and drainz - a good mix. And three of us outside a pub in wadorz! Yeah, still not sure how them overflows work further up, yet. It needs solving one day. They at least start off traversable. Maybe one of them does lead to that spiderz outfall
