Northumbria, the RAF, aircraft, snow and abandonment of the man-made environment; amongst my five favourite things in this life.
Fairytale spot and weather.
13 fighter bombers from the '50s; 3 manufacturers, 3 countries of origins, 3 languages on the dials.
1x Soviet Sukhoi Su-17
4x American Lockheed Shooting Stars
8x French Dassault Mysteres
?x Arbitrary Missiles
Deep in the wastelands of some of Britain's most isolated wilderness, a lowly decoy airfield somewhere on RAF Spadeadam, surrounded for a mile each way by peat bogs and dense coniferous forest, doesn't get much human touch. From the forlorn aerodrome in question the central buildings of the base are visible; including the radar, an array of missiles pointed toward the sky, and any cars moving across the horizon. The cosmopolitain range of aircraft here are telling of a post-cold war acquisition, and the middle sweep of 4 Dassaults was not there one year ago, I believe,. The surrounding wilderness is on a scale seldom seen as vast throughout the rest of our island, the entire base's near 10,000 acre plot is essentially an ocean of peatbogs with sprinklings of terra firma islands.

Live bombing run exercises somewhere else on Spadeadam were taking place on day of visit, has anyone seen the Soviet film Come and See? You know if you know.

Loving this place, definitely worth trudging through the bogs in my opinion.

Cheers all,
Slayaa, what a nice message, thanks very much! This forum is inspiring me a lot also, it really covers almost every iota of abandoned stuff in Britain. I'm in South Africa for the next few weeks, hoping to hit this empty town in Namibia called Kolmanskop but no concrete plans yet

Did you need any form of permission for this visit, being on a live RAF base?

Depends how you plot your course ;)
Besides live pieces of infrastructure, a surprising amount of MOD land is public right of way at one's own risk.
