Zcott, Irishmanlost and myself teamed up for a day of adventure
First stop - the Imfamous Maze prison, security tight and no access (but then again who would attempt to illegally enter a prison?). It is in the process of being demolished and the land redeveloped.
next stop - I was aware of a factory building at Nutts Corner on the was to Belfast Int Airport, and as with our previous explores the site was larger than we first expected. We even found a wee piece of history.
So - access, easy and straight forward. Again because it was during daylight hours, during the working week we went for the obvious look with hi vis vests on. No problems encountered with neighbouring sites.
First up where two small buildings. both were pretty wrecked and vandalised. the second had a very strange odour and we were glad to get out of it.
Everywhere I go, there are always lots of Chubb extinguishers
The third building was an air traffic control tower - also well vandalised - Nutts Corner was an RAF Coastal Command base in the 1940's then a commercial airport. Parts of the old 1940s run way are still visible
Zcott navigating the overhead dangers
From the roof looking back onto the main complex - Northern Ireland Electricity training centre as we discovered
The brown brick building to the left was the residential part of the complex and all the rooms had been 'reorganised'
Most of the window frames have been removed - probably for scrap value - eerie!
Outside the security gate house - every room key, except 28!
The tiered lecture theatre
led to lots of training rooms
Health & Safety at work
The canteen
This reminded me of the Old Communist Block propoganda posters
There were large training sheds
with large fuses
I wonder what they taught in here? skin up lads!
Then the hidden gem
Whilst on the roof of the control tower, we noticed this little building hidden in the brambles and undergrowth behind the first building we explored
An intact and unusually clean 1940 air raid shelter
With modern lighting fitted to the interior
Irishmanlost investigating a find
On the whole - yet another amazing and successful Team NI explore
