I'm interested to know whether anyone is aware of the old railway office building along Wherstead Road, Ipswich? I used to pass this site many times when I was young, and remember it looking derelict as early as 2005, long after the engineers' yard at Ipswich Halifax Junction was removed and land transformed into a housing estate. I returned to Ipswich last weekend and was surprised to see it still standing within the housing development - despite all the other former railway structures being long-gone. It looked trashed and empty from the split-second I saw it from the window of my train, but I wonder if anyone has any information or experience visiting the office? As far as I gather, its no longer registered as Network Rail property, and there are no posts online. Any leads?

It could be listed, which would explain why it's still up. Go to the local records office, a quick squizz of google got me no joy. Looks worth a mooch :thumb

In 2006 Network Rail applied for permission to create 40 dwellings on the site. They withdrew the application the same year. It doesn’t appear to have been sold in the intervening years. I can’t find any other mention anywhere. Also it’s no longer recognised as a building by the Land Registry.

Listed? Never thought of that (although its in a pretty poor state for a building of national importance) hahaha

I've got a few mates who work for Network Rail in the area, I'll see what information they might be able to provide, thanks!

It's been derelict for as long as I can remember!

Wasn't even sure what it was previously.

Let us know what/ if you find out!

Some updates... Or maybe not >_< I made some inquires but no one seems to be aware the building exists. It seems it fell off the register and into the unknown when Ipswich TME closed last decade. However, I did hear from a friend who lives near by the building was once a drug den and there are plans to further develop the site so the building will probably be demolished. Anyone curious about searching?

Went in a while ago and its alright, other than the offices and an old railway junction box there not a huge amount to see. The offices are pretty much all stripped out and the usual vandalism from undesirables sums the place up really. Despite this a few perks include lots of peeling paint and roof access. If your going for total completion then you might want a bright torch as the bottom floor is pitch black. Didn't fancy it by myself personally

Bit of an update, all the exterior Windows have now been completely boarded up. Highly doubt that access is still possible.

Last I knew you could get in a few months ago but yes it's all boarded up I've seen diggers going in recently and also the disused railway track on the bridge has had cargo carriages parked on there so maybe using it to clear debt if they are knocking it down
