The history

The part grade 2 listed court first opened in the 1850’s before closing in 2016 due to cost cutting measures.
The Police Court, the Monthly Sessions, the Brewster Sessions as well as the Magistrates Courts, brought all kinds of cases and people to the town. The Coroners Court was also held there and for many years the South West Lancs Coroner was Sir Samuel Brighouse, a man raised in the town who knew the area and the people well. Early in his career he oversaw the inquest into the death of James Maybrick, at one time the main suspect in the Jack the Ripper case.
There is a measuring gauge from 1879 on the outside brickwork you ensure fair trading in the town and the Constable at the time had his own private entrance with the words “Constable” etched into a large stone block above it due to his importance.
Plans have been approved in 2019 to convert it into a r, restaurant and aparthotel.

The explore

Local youths seemed to have found there way in here, I’ve been keeping an eye on it for a while but I think their carelessness in hiding the fact that they have been inside in a town that has many vigilant locals will ensure this one is sealed up tight very quickly. Not least that you can see the police station car park out the back window!
Lovely building with lots of historical bits and a sense of being secure (I hope) and intimidating carries deep within it still. Loved being able to walk straight up from the cells into the dock!
