I think up until the point of visiting this place, this was the best place we had seen in Italy, simply because it had stuff in it! The day was scorchio and I think this was also the day we saw our first dirt devils...

A bit of history, borrowed from here:
During 1872 the Province of Parma placed the provincial mental hospital in wing of the Ducal palace of Colorno. The local unfortunately had not an adequate structure to be an asylum and today that deficiency is the symbol of decay where patients lived: during this time the asylum of Colorno was a “social containerâ€, people came in instead of pathology but by the level of social danger. In half of the years ’60 Colorno was invested by an anti-psychiatry movement, in order to denunce the violence done inside asylum. In 1969 it was occupied by a group of students of Medicine to demonstrate against the social discriminations between the patients, the inside hierarchy and the absence of control by the familiar. In the same year arrived at Colorno as director the Dr. Franco Basaglia that began the de-institutionalization process of the mental hospital. The structure definitive was closed in the years 90.
