Ouseburn Culvert, Newcastle - November 2014

Evening Folks,

This is the first culvert I've ever done, can't say they're something I'm usually interested in or excited by however I was talked into this by Borolad after a failed derp in the area. Attracted mainly by the place's WW2 history as an air raid shelter. Anyway, we were totally unprepared for this one, which meant the first section was spent paddling, in November... Great :crazy Turned out to be worth it though in the end, and my view on Culverts, Drains has been improved, may even go and check out some local ones :)

So a little History and then on with the pictures!!

The concrete culvert began construction in 1907- being completed in 1911. The Culvert carry's the Ouseburn beneath the suburb of Heaton and runs for a total length of 2150 ft. The culvert cost £23,000 to complete. During WW2 the culvert had a shelter installed to house local residents in the event of an air raid.
