The Richard L. Hearn Generating Station (named after Richard Lankaster Hearn) is a decommissioned electrical generating station in Toronto. The plant has been described as "Pharaonic in scale", and encompasses 650 thousand cubic metres of space, large enough to fit 12 Parthenons inside. Construction of the facility was completed in 1951 and at full capacity the boilers burned around 400 tonnes of coal per hour, with the turbines and other equipment requiring about 36 million gallons of cooling water from Lake Ontario per hour. The site employed around 400 people at its peak, however the slow decline of the station due to an abundance of other cleaner functioning power sources in the region meant its days were numbered and in 1983, after several years of slowly phasing out each section of the plant, was mothballed and closed.

The station was purchased from Ontario power by an independant and is to date used as a film set. Casino royal, Silent hill and the new Total recall film used it for scene location.
The stack is 780 feet.
The windows at the top of the building were smashed here to allow the smoke from the cutting torches to exit while the de-comissioning of the turbines was taking place.
The turbine hall is over three hundred metres long, these huge concrete trungeons supported the now absent plant and cushioned the ground from the vibration of the eight 200megawatt generators that ran 24 hours a day for fifty years.
