There hasn't been a report on this for a fair few years, but all of the old reports make it look more than worthy of a visit. So on a cold February afternoon, me and @Esoteric Eric cranked up the drain splore bus and headed in the direction of Halifax. Pipemare is a culverted section of the Hebble Brook. It ends with a load of messed up utility pipes tangled up at the end in a right old pipemare.

The first potential ‘mare of the day greeted us as we pulled up to find that the inflow entry point has changed quite a lot from older reports, by way of this substantial new metal grid.

Fortunately where there’s a will (and a bit of breathing in) there’s a way and we soon found a way down and in.

The first section is a large spraycreted tunnel...

Followed by some nice brick...

The sound of rushing water gets louder as you approach these falls...

Into here...

Not far in were these side pipes. One led to this overflow...

Whilst another was a shaft with ladders up to the manhole high above. At this point you can see just how far beneath the ground we were.

Strangely this shaft also featured a treasure chest. Minus any treasure, unfortunately (just imagine the clickbait titles you could get out of that...)

Not far down was another shaft and overflow, and then my favourite bits...

Approaching more daylight I had been worried that the nice metal staircase I’d seen in earlier reports might also have gone, when they renovated he inflow metalwork - but was pleased to see this bit remains in all its rusty glory.

Onwards. Not sure if anyone's noticed before, but it’s a bloody pipemare in here.

Plans to continue onwards from here were aborted due to the ominous stench of death, so we climbed out, slightly alarming a couple of locals in the process who (all credit to them) acted as if two people dragging themselves out from the river was a standard occurrence.

Good effort that, always good to see these drain classics coming back around again :thumb

It's proper slippery in places and making it through without some kind of dunking here is almost unavoidable :D

Bloody loved it, and good to have these big ones that others have done to visit in between the hunt for new stuff! We both somehow managed to stay upright too, but it defo gets skiddy in places.

How come you didn't manage the d/s bit, wondering what has changed ?

After the end bit with the pipes you mean? We were going to carry on and there was the most awful smell! Not your usual kind of drain smell but like some kind of chemicals and death mixed together. Not smelt anything like it before and as we’ve not got a gas detector it felt like time to call it a day.

Very odd, I can only assume there is an issue with one of the sewer pipes in that stretch.

There is one that runs down the LHS in a concrete conduit and also some older iron pipes that carry waste water within the brook itself

Yeah, it was just suddenly really strong like it was something flowing in from somewhere at that point. Can’t actually compare the smell to anything else as it was so rancid!

(I also had a really cold foot at this point, but that’s a less interesting story).

Nicely done, chap - it's always nice when someone pipes up about a forgotten drain. Do you think you'll go back and investigate the rancid stench of death section; was there much further to go?

Cheers! I think I can probably live without going further for now, but will drop back in for another look if I’m back in the area for something else at some point. I think tweek’s last pic in this thread probably shows best what the end bit looks like: https://www.28dayslater.co.uk/pipemare-halifax-april-2012.t70071 Don’t think we were far off, but @Ojay would probs know best!

I also wouldn’t mind getting under this:

But I can’t quite work out if that connects up or not.
