Have known about this place for a while but where it's pretty much on my door step have always just thought "I'll go there another time". An artical came out recently about this location so I thought I should go asap to avoid the tour busses and I'm glad I did.
When we arrived there was a group of "explorers" there already standing with two police officers. The manager of the hotel had seen them trying to climb the fence and called the police. We ended up going over and having a chat. The manager was saying she knows about the artical and doesn't understand why so many people have been turning up. The police advised her to get a better gate as the site is very still easily accessible, whether you go over, through or under the gate. They also advised onsite security.
We took a couple photos and decided to go back later to get a proper look. Even in the dark the places are an impressive site and interesting to have a look around.
I don't know the full history but have been told they were RAF planes and are now just "scrap" in the old part of the air port.
