The Sessions House was erected 1807-13 by Charles Watson as a new court building for Pontefract, after the old Town Hall had become delapidated and inadequate for this purpose. In 'The Buildings of England' Sir Nikolaus Pevsner describes the architecture of the Sessions House as "Neo Grecian, built of stone, with Ionic Portico and Pediment
