I was hoping this was going to turn out to be something good, having spent a few nights in the tunnels under the old hospital prior to its demolition i was hoping that this was in some way access to the underground reservoirs of Stanley Royd. Apparently there was a tunnel between Pinderfields and Stanley Royd which was used when Pinderfields was the acute hospital (part of Stanley Royd). Gutted!

Hi
The entrace you have seen is all that is left of the service tunnels of Pinderfields and Stanley Royd.In the old Pinderfields there was a service tunnel that run under the main corridor (from ward 7 down to ward 3) near the end you could turn right (under ward 1) and head underground towards Stanley Royd. About half way between the tunnel brached left to Stanfeld and right to Rowan House also around that junction there was a stairway to the outside (these still remain i guess these are what you have seen) from there you could continue into the boiler house and then on to Stanley Royd. These tunnels carried power, water and steam between the two hospitals and all the other buildings. The old Pinderfields is now a car park and oldest part of Stanley Royd has been made into flats. I would guess all the old tunnels have been filled or closed off.The
tunderground reservoirs of Stanley Royd i think is still there? it was under the bowling green near what is now the Aston centre.

update time again . having been fed some bull by a lad at work who had supposedly been down and it just been a hole to nowhere i have better news .

this is infact the old steam tunnels and up until thursday access was blocked off from this entry .

balfour beatty are planning to run a new water main thru the tunnel (the reason i was downthere unblocking it )as there having water problems in the new hospital . iv also located a seconed entry to the tunnel and there is a 3rd at the top end of the now flattened site

some nasty looking pipe lagging down there so take a mask .
Be quick if your going down as its presently unlocked .

if any 1 local fancys doing it drop me a pm il be happy to go back down there
