The Knowledge

Originally known as Scottow Aerodrome, RAF Coltishall was a fighter airfield in WW2 and afterwards a station for night fighters then ground attack aircraft until closure.

After longstanding speculation, the future of the station was sealed once the MOD announced that the Eurofighter Typhoon, a rolling replacement aircraft, would not be posted there. The last of the Jaguar squadrons left on 1st April 2006 and the station finally closed, one month early and £10 million under budget, on 30 November 2006.

The station motto was Aggressive in Defence. The station badge is a stone tower surmounted by a mailed fist grasping three bind bolts (arrows), which symbolised a position of strength in defence of the homeland, indicative of the aggressive spirit which Coltishall fighter aircraft were prepared to shoot down the enemy.

It's now been turned into housing and a prison, there's also BIG plans for it soon, you can read a bit more about that here...

The Explore

There were some local Heritage days put on by the nice folk of our county and some cheerful old chappies agreed to show us around the site on a coach tour with some stops along the way. Probably the most luxurious explore I've ever done! Afterwards we put the tour to good use and had a sneak around all the bits that weren't included
