Im currently doing a little research on the British Military Hospital Waringsfield that was in little town of Moira during WW2. It closed in 1963 and all staff etc were transferred to the newly opened Musgrave Park Hospital Military Wing.
One of the transcripts I read mentioned how as a small girl, one of the locals remembered lines of ambulances parked up outside RAF Meghaberry waiting for the aircraft to land - brining wounded to NI for transfer onwards to the hospital.
Did a little scouting around Moira, and the hospital is now a nice new housing estate (building land is at a premium here in NI).
So, went off to see if the airfield still existed - and behold it was (NI is scattered with old airfields) in part !
Meghaberry is now imfamous as the site of HM Prison Meghaberry, hence the poor quality of the flash earth picture.
Zoom Earth | LIVE weather map, storm tracker, rain radar
Only two buildings remain, but lots of evidence as to the existance of the airfield - on with the pics
the first floor
The second building I would guess at being a generator housing
remnants of buildings long gone
This large enamel drum was in on of the little ditches
date stamped
The two main runways are almost complete
In use in parts
Down Autograss circuit, and intreging other buildings in background
No tour of NI would be complete without a burnt out bus ! (or a prison in the background)
Pity there wasnt more of the buildings left - but a nice little find all the same
