History:
RAF Newton is a former Royal Air Force station located 7 miles east of Nottingham and was built in 1939.
It was used briefly as a bomber base for squadrons to re-equip after the Battle of France and then as a flying training school during the Second World War and beyond until 2000 when it was decommissioned.
The abandoned houses used as accommodation for soldiers on the base were used to film scenes from the film This Is England.
The RAF Newton site is, according to the Ministry of Defence, contaminated with Radium.The contamination comes from Radium that was used to coat the dials of aircraft and other equipment so that they could be seen in the dark. and remains radioactive for thousands of years.
However it has been demolished now to be converted into offices and housing. the only remaning aspect of the RAF base is the control tower which is used as offices but still stands overlooking the site.

Access was a doddle minus some stinging nettles, once in the compound we quickly realised it was much larger than we had anticipated so did not get to see a large amount due to losing light and not wanting to attract attention with torches.
When leaving the site we were approached by a member of security in a car, he asked us to leave and asked if we had taken any photographs, we admitted we had to which he explained this was forbidden and we were to delete them. we explained we were unaware of this fact and apologised.
