Most people go here for the tower, but no one seems to bother with this part (guess everyone just wants to go the tower). But me and man gone wrong really fancied the old original building further away. I love original buildings, and these were better than expected. Lots of the original doors, windows and other features still in situ. It had been used by a farmer for a while at some point, maybe even a business as a toilet block had been added later I think.
RAF Thurleigh started life in 1940 as an airfield for RAF bomber command. It was later extended to a ministry class A airfield. Three converging converging runways were extended, at the time it had four metal T2 type hangars. The airfield was handed over to USAAF for use of the American bomber command like so many airfields around this area. This was why it was all extended and updated. Very quickly after the war the airfield was developed to host what would be RAE Bedford. The runways were again extended.
