Originally opened in 1902, Rauceby Lunatic Asylum was under the control of South Kesteven Council up to 1940, when the Royal Air Force took control for the war effort. After WW2, Rauceby went back to being a Mental Health facility, but changes in attitude towards Mental Illness provoked a change in care of Mental Illness and Learning Disabilities in the 1980’s. Due to these changes, from 1988 lunatic asylums started being phased out. Rauceby was a victim and eventually closed in the late 1990’s after spending it’s final years as a day centre and out-patient clinic.

For somebody who works in mental health, this was a massive interest for me.
