Having driven down to Milton Keynes to collect an eBay buy, I decided to head home via Rauceby just for a nosey. Kesteven County Asylum, or Rauceby Hospital as it later became known, opened in 1902. GT Hine was responsible for the design and construction began in 1897. It was commandeered by the RAF in 1940 and served as a crash and burns unit until 1947 when the main hall was destroyed by a fire. Thereafter, the NHS took over, finally closing it in 1998.
Upon arrival it didn’t look like anything special but somehow it turned out to be a very satisfying explore, despite the fact so much has been demolished and what’s left is well stripped. Most of the remaining buildings have even had the ground floors pulled up but I still found plenty to look at. I was a bit rushed by the fading light but here are the pictures, starting with my personal favourite.
