More of a mini report than anything else! Didn't know if this should be in the "other sites" or "underground" to be honest! I would love to find something like this but on a larger scale, but I don't think Scotland has too much to offer 
My mum found this book on east calders "raw camps" and I've been meaning to check them out for a while. There's 2 of these kilns, about 30 metres apart.
Some info found in the book:
"At that time, the Camps was a household word in Scotland - known far and near. It was the centre of perhaps the largest limestone trade in the country."
"The Lime Kilns"
"The Camps limestone trade was at its height 40 years ago (i.e. 1880). The whirr of engines and the clink of hammers issued from half-a-dozen large quarries; and the smoke ascended continually from as many kilns. A strong service of carts plied between the quarries and Linn's Mill on the Union Canal (for the railways had not yet touched the Camps). Work was carried on night and day in some of the quarries. The supply of labour from half-a-dozen surrounding villages was not sufficient to meet the demand. Even passing tramps were readily offered jobs."
"These kilns are on private property and now flooded. The kilns were filled from the toop platform, with coal and limestone, then burned for many hours in the kilns. The processed lime was raked out through drawkilns whitin the arches at the bottom."
These Kilns are now flooded, which I stupidily forgot my wellies(too much of a trek to go back and get them), but thought fuck it and went in anyway and froze my feet and legs in the process lol I had my poor mum doing the same, I'm so cruel hehe I've never felt so much pain, I thought the skin on my legs was going to peal off.
