After a recent trip to Belgium with a few days in Brussels we stopped at Charleroi on the way back to the airport to have a look around. I've seen reports on here of visits to the power stations, blast furnaces and cooling towers, and although we managed to have a great walk around these looking in from outside the fences, it would seem that having a proper explore of them requires a bit more planning than just popping over to see them on a weekday afternoon!
We actually intended to visit what I assumed to be an open and functioning cafe based in an abandoned plane a short Metro ride away in nearby Gilly but it transpired that it has been shut for a number of years by the look of things. luckily we were able to get an excellent lunch at a nearby Turkish place instead.
On site is a (firmly locked) abandoned plane which had previously been converted into an Italian restuarant and a railway carriage which had been converted into a Gelataria. The site seems to be used as a car park now and as such it's easy to stroll in and have a look around.
