On a recent motorbike tour of the area I happened to be passing through Beočin in Serbia on the road towards Fruška Gora Mountain so I took the opportunity to have a look at Spitzer Castle (it seems to sometimes be called Spicer Castle).

Built sometime around 1890 by Ede Spitzer, a German industrialist who owned the local cement works, it was abandoned at the onset of WW2 when the family fled the country. From reading online it seems that it has been used for a number of purposes since then including a cultural center, a library, a hotel and apparently even as some kind of command center by the German Army during WW2. It has also been used as a location for a number of films, including the Clint Eastwood film "Kelly's Heroes".

Although the site has been designated as a cultural monument it just sits completely open on the edge of town so access is simply a case of strolling in there.
