With the development of steam engines Lodz’s rivers ceased to serve multiple mills and began to act as sewers.
At the beginning of the 20th century it started to be a big problem for the city authorities and its inhabitants. That’s why in 1901 William Heerlein Lindley was commissioned to design and build waterworks and sewage system for Lodz. Works began in 1925, and the Lodka River Sewer, which can be seen in the pictures, was also constructed then. By the Second World War more than 100 kilomometres were built.
