THE HISTORY
Rummu quarry is located in Vaselama Parish, Estonia, its about 1 hour south of Tallinn.
Its a quarry that first started working in the late 1930's mining limestone and marble. The labour for the quarry was provided by the adjacent prisons inmates. It was worked until the 1990's and when the pumping equipment was turned off it refilled with ground water.
It has since become a significant attraction in the summer months with beach party goers and swimmers flocking to the location from the area. However in 2016 attempts have been made to close the area off with concerns voiced as to the safety of swimming in the lake.
The prison area would appear to still be in use, perhaps by the owners of the whole site, with occasional security patrols and vehicles still in the compound.
THE VISIT
Having heard of the area, I thought a visit was in order whilst working in Estonia. All the exploring was done on MTB and foot. I didn't attempt to gain access to the prison area, although from a disused guard tower a good view was possible (including the approach of possible guards).
