A few days ago I photographed a small part of Severalls (mental) Hospital for a photography project of mine.
Severalls Hospital closed down in 1997 and has only just got planning permission for the demolition of the remaining buildings for January 2014.
Sadly, this is probably my last and only visit.
Unfortunately, when the Hospital was due for closing in 1997, the Padded Seclusion Rooms were removed in order for the 'Decade of Change' as were the Iron Gates and Railings designed to prevent patients from escaping.
The Hospital's new superintendent (Dr. Barton) started chipping away at 'old traditions' and methods associated with Mental Institutions (take the Electroconvulsive Therapy Department for example, a large area used on a daily basis.)
Despite all this, I found it a truly fascinating place.
I only got to explore one building as the guard caught us on the way out.
I am new to photography and this website, please feel free to give constructive criticism :P
Thanks for looking!
