Probably one of this most impressive places I've had the privilege to explore. It was eerily quiet, with only the hum of the main Sheffield high street just outside. The place was a bit of a mixture of condition, some parts were fully destroyed with floors fallen through etc, whereas other's seem to have kept in top nic like the court room it's self. Generally there was no graffiti at all, which was a nice chance.. only damp and old age had taken it's toll.
The place was pretty huge inside, having 3 court rooms, underground cells, a clock tower, countless flights of stairs, secret doors and from my memory around 5 floors of interesting rooms. Felt pretty surreal being inside.
History
This building's been cover a couple of times, so i'll keep it brief.
Its been abandoned since 1997, when after multiple extensions, the Crown Court decided the premisses were still to small. History of the Town Hall dates back to the 1700's, but The Old Town Hall was built in 1807–8 by Charles Watson. It was extended in 1833 & 1866, with the most prominent feature being the Clock Tower.
In 2007, it was named by the Victorian Society as one of their top ten buildings most at-risk.
