PRE WAR - CONVALESENT HOUSE HOSPITAL, NESS ROAD SHOEBURYNESS

The Old Mental Hospital "EXPLORED"

!

This building had several different medical purposes over the years..

The former hospital ,originally built as a pre-war convalescent home, was last used for non-residential specialist health care until 2013. In June 2018, a planning application was submitted to Southend Council in a bid to demolish the derelict site and replace it with ten new homes. In August 2018 seven fire crews tackled a blaze here caused by arsonists damaging 50% of the building's roof and the floors below. The fire which tore through the derelict hospital has been recorded as deliberate.

The blaze, which began at around 4.30pm 23rd August 2018 caused damage to approximately 50% of the building's roof as well as the floors below. A total of eight crews attended the blaze. Specialist units included a water bowser from Corringham and an aerial ladder platform from Chelmsford. The flames had been brought under control by 6pm. Much of the roof had been destroyed and several floors below had suffered structual fire damage. Police remained on scene until 11.50pm and enquiries were ongoing.

The planning application for demolision has since been given the go ahead

The NHS sees the site as surplus to its needs...

All in all it was a great explore, we are still finding our feet as explorers,, we were mindful of the residents of the home just across the car park, and trod extremely carefully testing each step we took on the upper floors. We made minimal noise the sound of crunching glass was in avoidable most of the time.. The building was heavily caked in pigeeon feces yet didnt smell bad ...not that it smelt good but there was no strong odor..

We looked outside and around the entire perimeter and think we have found access to a 'basement' yet the steps that lead down were heavilly flooded and have been for sometime..we mo go back and take a closer look another time.

Hope you enjoy the pics as much as we did the actual explore - #DE-eVOLVED SS3

Thats better, good report. Lots of peeling going on. Not much graffiti, that fire really did a number on the place.

It really did.. The remaining roof frame is very light to touch... Strongly advise not to walk the last 25 foot on the upper floor as it feels to far gone .. There was a chimney or tower that had no entry point just we presume an opening at the top........or bottom !? it can be seen in the background of a broken windowpain .. possibly a vent for the basement, to bad the steps leading down to the exterior door are submerged under a good few feet of presumedd rain water...unsure how well sealed as far as water tightness goes ...so the basement COULD be emmaculate..of course the other side of the cin is the basemeent is effectively a swimming pool of colled rain water... I will retturn out of curiocity..

Thank you for sharing these! I drive past this every day and always say to my husband I need to go check it out.. It was only today after being stuck in traffic that I used my phone camera to zoom in on the sign to find out it was a former mental health unit! We always assumed it was an NHS care home. I've also only just joined this site to comment here so sorry if i've done it wrong its a bit confusing to navigate! We're local to the area and love a good urban explore (in a completely harmless manner). I find researching places afterwards so full filling. We've done quite a few places in the country along with my father and younger brother so would love to tag along to any future explores. I don't get out much apart from that!
