Anyway:
I have been intending to go back to shorts for ages to finish this report but since it is now so hard to get in- I might as well post what I did!!
On Tuesday (a long time ago now!) me, dad of doodlebug, A Numpty (very scared of the dark
and two ‘mystery guests’ met next to shorts tunnels.
Equipped with a ladder we climbed through the entrance and set off into the tunnels.
The first part of the tunnels is the shorts factory, used during the war to manufacture planes, and this was then used by Blaw Knox. As you walk up the entrance tunnel (now not the entrance!) there are florescent light fittings every few metres. Further up on the left is the central factory and on the right is the entrance to the air raid shelters.
There was a fire a few years ago which as destroyed most of the documents although a number of blueprints can be seen scattered on the floor outside the storage area.

There are two vents in the back of the factory area, one in the ventilation room (found by following the air vents or by walking straight down the first tunnel.
(Shown as the open one on the map- even though its not open!) The vents have curved corrugated iron around them. I know you can see them from the road behind the entrance.
Halve way between the two entrances tunnels is a door with a short tunnel. Then on the right is a toilet block, the middle toilet complete with brush and bottle (it’s not surprising the vandals haven’t stolen them!) Straight ahead is a steep slope to the chalk part of the tunnel. The entrance to which is full of wire mesh making climbing down tricky. (Slippery underfoot). I don’t know what this tunnel was used for. It couldn’t have been an entrance since the brick vent between the tunnels is too small to fit through. You will see when you find the tunnels that between the entrances is a brick ‘box’ which is the end of this tunnel.
The air raid tunnels are very complicated and hard to explain. There is a 400 metre tunnel with remains of benches on the wall. This leads to the rest of the air raid shelter. The tunnel then continues to the very end. In total the tunnel is about 900m long and has many tunnels branching off.
There are three air shafts within the air raid part, all with signs on the door. These all branch from the main tunnel however at least two are blocked.
On the main tunnel, if you follow signs to the first aid you find the medical centre. There are many pipes in these rooms and lots of breeze blocks walls. Possibly put in with the pipes for the flats above, to strengthen the tunnel. There were two entrances from/to the medical block/ outside world but I didn’t go in that bit so I don’t know how accessible they are.
Near the well there are two vents (one air brick!) to outside, if you look through there is the car park for some flats. If you walk along the mystery road near the tunnels you can see the vents.
There are 4 known places with asbestos so if in doubt wear a mask! One of which is past a load of mould, just beyond the breached wall after walking over some polystyrene.
There are at least 8 breached walls, one is made from cement bags and is near a blocked? Exit so probably isn’t worth the bother of climbing over it.
I will update this and add more posts when I can find a better way of describing the map I have- it’s very difficult!
Sorry about the pictures, when you spend 4 hours in a set of 3km tunnels, what can you expect!
