Silverlands has been done many times, and seeing reports of it when it had recently closed in all its glory makes it quite sad seeing it in the state it is now, this had been on my list from the day I started exploring but thought it was the one that got away until bumping into some explorers last night while at another location. So grateful to them for going with us, made my day!

Brief history,
The Actors' Orphanage was started in 1896 by Kittie Carson at Croydon and was established as the Actors' Orphanage Fund in 1912.

In 1915 the Orphanage moved to Langley Hall at Langley (was in Buckinghamshire - now in Berkshire). The orphanage was both a home and a school to approximately 60 children. At ages 15–17 pupils sat the School Leaving Certificate of Cambridge University and if 10 subjects were taken to Matriculation.

The home and school was moved to Silverlands at Chertsey, Surrey in 1938 where it remained until 1940. In September 1940 the Orphanage was evacuated to the USA where the children were housed in New York City at the Edwin Gould Foundation, and the children were sent to local schools.

After the war ended the Fund established a home (once again at Silverlands, Chertsey). This arrangement ended in 1958 and the Actors' Orphanage ceased to exist. Those remaining children were moved to new houses in Hemmel Hempstead Road Watford. Some were placed in private schools.

The 1912 fund was re-established as the Actors' Charitable Trust and financial and care help was offered to those in need.

Over the years many from the theatrical profession have given time and money to the running of the orphanage including some who became presidents of the orphanage among whom are Sir Gerald du Maurier, Noël Coward, Laurence Olivier and the last president Lord Attenborough.

The explore was very precarious in places, part of the incredible staircase has been damaged, not sure if intentional or by works trying to remove it, was a shame to see either way. Not many pics as it was dark and only had my phone but I thoroughly enjoyed the explore.

how have the stairs been damaged, look to be intact in your photos. Certainly doesn't look like someone's made an attempt to remove the stairs so id imagine damage is by unofficial visitors.

I definitely think it’s by unofficials, thought I’d uploaded the pic showing damage I’ll post it now. Such a shame it’s been left for so long then someone comes along and just breaks it.

Are they actually going to do anything with this? The big chandelier is now off the ceiling as well...

Big planning application is approved, demolition of most of the buildings excluding the listed parts such as the ballroom, tower and staircase. Parts will be getting removed for storage very soon, following it's demolition into a 0osh load of flats/housing. Ballroom will become a swimming pool too!

Do you know when the demolition is happening?
