Are those gate things controlled remotely? Seems this yellow plastic stuff is becoming the norm now.

yellow plastic stuff = GRP it doesn't stop the pikeys having a go though!

The penstocks are regulated by a combination of the flow hawks, ultra-sonic sensors and some simple control unit ;)

I imagine impersonating trains below them isn't the best of ideas :D

Imagine if, say two people were down there, and both making, say, train noises, that could be heard distinctly and loudly from above. Sorry, my imagination runs away with me sometimes. ;)

I found it, interesting stuff.

Bit scary that some of these penstocks can be sound activated, if I am reading this thread right. Safe exploring peeps!!!

No they aren't sound activated, the ultra sonic fires out a constant signal, its main purpose to measure the amount of flow when present, which in conjunction with the flow Hawks and other parameters decides how and when to adjust the Penstocks or close them all together if required

So basically depending on flow/weather these things can close by themselves?

I read that the flowhawk has gprs, it relays any data back to say united utilites, and they can take action presumably, or some automation happens?
