This is my first ever post, and it was probably one of the most interesting finds.
After uni, back in 2012 I went travelling around Europe, mainly Germany. My stop in Berlin was last of 2 stops and I'd been out on the road for 6 weeks. I was staying in a hostel with my, at the time, girlfriend and we got chatting with a Canadian guy in the dorm. He told me of something 'cool and free' to do. So, he gave me directions to getting the train out to a park in the north of the Planterwald. I remember scribbling directions down and hoping it was accurate enough for me to find. It felt like something out of a movie.
I remember eventually getting off at the train stop, and then making my way towards the Ferris wheel that you could see from afar. We walked through a woods by which time we had lost sight of the Ferris wheel. Then all of a sudden we hit a big wooden fence. We managed to find a tree with a branch that was going over the fence so we climbed it and we got in.
A little history, opened 1969 and closed in 2002. Last owner was Norbert Witte, who packed up his bags and moved to Lima. He tried to run a park there but failed. In 2004 he was sentenced to 7 years in prison for trying to smuggle 180kg of cocaine, in a ride, from Peru to Germany. Spree park has been left standing, unused since 2002 – according to Wikipedia
Turns out it was something out of a movie. As soon as I got to the railway track I remembered a scene from the film ‘Hanna’ with one of the last scenes filmed there, only a year before.
