Visited with whittyboy...Springhead dates back to 1858 when a William Warden said he could supply up to 5 million gallons of water per day.
In december 1860 the well produced 4 1/2 million gallons, so it was decided to build a new works at the site, by 1862 it was up and running.
The 40 ton cornish beam engine (called the woodhouse engine), was installed in 1876 and improved capacity to 6 3/4 million galls per day, two more engines were installed in 1884 the Jackson Fountain Engine 3 1/2 to 4 million gallons, and the Bowling Engine 7 million galls per day.
By 1952 the woodhouse engine was mothballed and has not moved since.
The station was fully modernised in 1957 when a diesel electric was installed.
