After spending the day walking around Vogelsang, we looked at visiting the SS Bakery on the way home. Darkness was setting in and it was supposedly just near the station so we thought we'd give it a try. After 10 minutes of walking, we checked the map and realised it wasn't as close as we thought and the amount of walking we'd done that day had completely shattered us, so we decided to go and eat instead and try again the next day. It's a good thing we did turn back that day as the walk there was quite some distance...again!
The bus from the station was once every 2 hours... it'd be quicker to walk! So off we went.
We arrived at the Bakery and saw another explorer wandering around who said there were some good photos to be taken here, and left him to it.
The SS bakery was a bakery occupied by inmates of the camp to make bread for the local concentration camp and was used between 1948 and 1991. Around 80 concentration camp prisoners worked here, baking and then distributing the bread. Poles, Germans, Latvians, Dutch, others, they were made to march the 2.5 kilometers from the Sachsenhausen camp each day. (info taken from www.abandonedberlin.com)
It was almost pitch black inside and without a flash or a tripod (i was too lazy to carry them that day) it proved quite difficult to capture but here's my pretty poor attempt!:
