History
St Cadoc’s was built in 1906, and was architect Alfred J. Wood’s second asylum project, following St Luke’s in Middlesbrough. The hospital, which opened in 1906 as the Newport Borough Asylum, was built to accommodate up to 350 patients. Extensive outbuildings were later added on the site, but since 2005 the number of residents has been very small with the growing emphasis on Community Care.St Cadoc’s Hospital in Caerleon has been featured as a location of episodes in a number of BBC television programmes such as Doctor Who, Torchwood and Being Human.

Very early photo, still under construction.

The Explore

Visited with @clebby. We had a fantastic day out.
This was my first asylum and having missed the original wave of asylum closures I feel very lucky to have seen one in this condition. The upstairs has some great features. My old sony cybershot can't compete with Clebby's camera and I won't deny that even with a better camera my pictures probably wouldn't be as good as the ones on Clebby's thread but I will try to post some different pictures from the ones already posted.

Day room with heated window seat. The central heating was put in during the mid to late 1960's. Before that a 'ward maid' would light the fires in the mornings.

A very small room (complete with dead pigeon) at the end of a corridor of tiny cells one of which would have been a padded cell. This room would have been for a nurse on night duty.

This may have been a visitors room. The window is a serving hatch to a small kitchen.

This operating table was for leg operations and amputations. In 1930 the table cost £95 and the split legs were an extra £2.

In one of the secure gardens there was a small building which looked like it could have been a cafe /shop.
The cigarette trolley was taken around the wards for the patients to buy from.
