St Georges Hospital opened in 1859 as the Northumberland County Lunatic Asylum. Throughout this time, nearly all mental health care in Northumberland was based at St Georges, but since 1985 increasing amounts of the hospital were closed and instead provided in community settings. The majority of the hospital closed in 1995, although some sections were kept open for IT and Admin and stayed open as late as 2003, with a new hospital being built in the grounds. I found a very interesting blog of a lady who did some training there in 1998/99, where she talks about living in her flat in the main buildings, and wandering through the abandoned corridors at night. Very much worth a read - HERE.

I very much liked how some sections had clearly been disused in the late 70's, and then walking through one door would bring you into a modern ward. There is signs of other use after the hospital closed, training for building and construction, and also a film set for Wire in the Blood. A lot of the graffiti and also the chess board ceiling was put in for an episode.

The hospital is rather un-trashed, and instead the majority of damage is all through the natural process of decay which made a nice change. The hospital features a tower which once housed a clock - this was removed in the 1980's.

On with the pics:

Some of the wooden floors had bowed considerably, as can be seen in this pic.

Looks like you had a good time on a Sunny day :)

It"s certainly one big bloody place, i thought it wasn"t too bad till i ventured into the Wards nearest the Church

You could go up a bit on the image size as they"re a little small, just a suggestion

It was a good day.

I did think they were a bit small but strangely that's the size I always select from Flickr. Does the new forum software reduce them do you think?
