The Northumberland County Pauper Lunatic Asylum opened on 16 March 1859. Situated in Cottingwood, designed by Henry Welsh, it was originally built to accommodate about 200 male and female patients.
Standing derelict since 1995 the place is boarded up and a secure fence around the whole site.
Inside it is a sea or corridors and doors, the place is big with plenty places to explore. Some places a very dark so a torch is recommended for any future visitors, the floors are unstable in some rooms, the stairs are weak to, as one of our friends found out.
The tower is a nice addition which leads up to the roof for a good view and photo opportunity. A lot of the rooms stand empty and looks like people have been in stealing copper cable and pipes from the premises.
A got lost at one point as it's a maze to get around in, the security is on site doing sweeps of the premises but a think once your inside they wouldn't come looking for you.
The place is massive alot to explore, didn't venture to far from the main hall way.
Some of the floors where pretty unstable so a note of caution to any future visits. There was a security guard in the area, and access is not the easiest .
