Visited this place yesterday with two non members.
I have been looking forward to visiting this place for quite a while now but only yesterday got down to doing it and was kind of gutted as all access to the Chapel and Hospital blocks were completely sealed off, i was pretty gutted as these were the two i was most looking forward to visiting :( , and even access to the courtyard was cut off, so the only building we were able to access was what i have gathered was the Nursing Home block. Access to this place is well, Challenging, all i will say is it consists of Razor/Barbed wire and abit of Abseiling, and if these things tickle your fancy, you will have a lot of fun. There was also a car parked in the middle of the courtyard but there were no signs of anyone being on site. Overall was a fairly decent mooch, it could have been worse and not have actually been able to get in at all, i guess it won't be long until the chapel and hospital blocks are open again.

History:
St Josephs Orphanage, Theatre Street, built and opened 1872 by Maria Holland Trust and run by the Sisters of Charity our Lady Mother of Mercy, nuns that came from Holland to open and run the orphanage.
Secondly, St Joseph's Hospital, Mount Street, referred to by all the locals as Mount Street Hospital was opened in 1877 again by the Holland Trust and run by the same order of nuns. However, completely seperate building and, at no time in its existence, was it an orphanage.
Thirdly, the R.C. Chapel on Theatre Street, designed by James Mangan and opened in 1910 was specially build by money raised for use by the Hospital and the Orphanage.
When the orphanage closed in 1954, the hospital took over the building and built a small link passage to link both buildings. The hospital used the orphanage building as a nursing school and it continued to be the convent for the order of nuns, as it had always been when it was an orphanage.
When the hospital closed in the 1980s (not sure of exact date) all the three buildings were purchased by the present owner who then converted the Orphanage building into a private residential elderly peoples nursing home. No original features left in that building from when it was an orphanage. He did not use the Chapel nor the hospital building.
He also owns the 1930s extension on Mount Street and the 1950s extension on Theatre street which was the geriatric wing for the hospital. Planning application is in for conversion to apartments, but doubts have been raised whether this will happen. The buildings are deteriorating badly and I fear for their future. Grade listing doesn't really protect them from neglect and potential destruction.
Note that the hospital and the orphanage were run and administered as completely separate institutions even though both were run by the same order of nuns and funded by Maria Holland nee Roper.

Nice ones :thumb

Amazing the difference a week makes with these buildings. Went round here with new mate urblex (cheers mate :) and we has full roaming rights except for the superstore side building which was all blocked up.

Enjoyed it mostly, apart from it being seemingly used as a Landfill site inside

Had a nice mooch & never saw a sole until till windows started getting smashed and doors forced from outside and we exited to greet a gang of Feral Kids WTF? Seems a popular place to trash and then go to MacDonalds :wanker

It"ll be open soon :)

Cheers :)

Seems a popular place to trash and then go to MacDonalds :wanker

That explains the stupid amounts of Mcdonald's boxes and smashed up sinks, after we had a good root around the place we heard what sounded like a few kids coming up the stairs so we did one out of our entry point to avoid any awkward confrontation, i have heard that this place is a popular hideout for the local youths to let off some steam haha

No kidding, they were blatenting smashing windows in from the street outside, as people walked past while access was wide open WTF?
Seemed to be the young "Tart"s" in control over idiot boyfriends trying to fathom out what Testosterone was when we were talking to them :wanker and in a busy Centre as well. Thought the Police would turn up :tumbleweed Nah :)

dont worry too much about cars in the court yard, a local business uses it for parking. they have keys to the gate. there has been a lot of kids hanging around the place recently and a few weeks ago there was around 40 of them on the side street and climbing on the roof. this is the bit you didnt do acid reflux
