History
St.Lukes chapel is part of the former Runwell Hospital that was formerly used as a mental and psychiatric asylum, based in Wickford. The chapel, dedicated to St. Luke was placed at the principal junction at the top of the drive - to its east lay admission, research, treatment convalescence and neurosis blocks. The Hospital chapel erected in 1937, designed by Elcock and Sutcliffe. It is constructed of white brick with heavy ashlar masonry with its beautiful stained glass windows. The chapel received Grade 2 Listed status in 2007, and is designed in what is called an eclectic Mediterranean style, typical of chapels born in the inter-war years. The hospital was shut on 23 April 2010 after being open for over 73 years. As the Chapel is a Grade II listed building they have left the chapel as is and have plans to renovate it. But have built a brand new housing estate called St Lukes part after the chapel of saint Luke.

The Explore
After Visiting Runwell hospital just after they had started work on it, we had come across St.Lukes chapel on our way in not realising it was even there until we did some reasearch. It was all boarded up but through the window we could see how immaculate it was inside it was beautiful, we had always said we must go back to the chapel to take pictures. After being busted by the police we decided it might be worth a visit to the Chapel as we had seen recent pictures. After finding a way in we were greeted by a huge timber door.We decided to make our way straight inside and we were not disappointed.

After Getting in we realised that it must had been open for a while as there was lots of damage inside where kids had got in and smashed the stained glass and set the bibles on fire inside, it was nothing like when we had first got a peek inside, such a shame.

The best part of the explore was the huge organ still in tact and the spiral staircase.

The old piano was cool and kinda creepy we all had a turn playing different songs.

The explore was amazing as it was the first chapel/Church I had been to that was derelict, I was glad to be able to get some cool shots of the organ and all the pews. Shame its such a mess now

Thanks for reading ;):thumb

Just a heads up, a group of us went to the chapel on the 18/11/17, we managed to get next to the building but it was completely boarded up and we ended up travelling all the way home. I wouldn't recommend trying to get in because as far as I could see there was no possible way. Also, the leftovers from Runwell Hospital were guarded by a security box attached to the building, the only way in was to get past it, but we didn't bother trying. :(

Agree with @Six and @Wevsky if your there, then try and try. Waste of time if not. I personally map out 2/3 to do in one area. But that being said, what a great report. I like the chapel alot. Some great shots there. I personally hate seeing bibles burnt, but im not a god squad either lol. Great that certain bits still there. So I did infact like this report a lot :thumb

Haha, that's not entirely what I meant. We did try, we scouted out every inch of the building but I don't think breaking down some boards is the way to go. But yeah, you're probably right, should have looked a little more!! I'll remember that for next time.

You always have to try these places. Sometimes I feel like people say it’s sealed to put other explorers off. Runwell was probably one of the easier explores I did before I was even into urbex. Thanks it was lovely inside but was a shame about all the damage.

Sorry if that's how it came off! I never said it to put anyone off, I said it as I thought I was doing good for the community by letting people know we couldn't see any possible way in. Kinda backfired?
