History

This pub/restaurant/hotel sits at the edge of the village of Tintern, close to the ruins of the famed abbey. In fact, the building would at one time have been inside the grounds of the abbey and parts of the site reputedly date back to 1206. For well over a century the site traded as the 'Beaufort Arms Hotel' (first recorded officially in 1835) and for a time, the pubs landlord was also the guide and keyholder for the abbey.

There is a relatively interesting recent history for the building, which underwent a full refurbishment in 2002, at the same time it was renamed. The owners at the time were the victims of a fraud which cost them their business and home. It is quite a story, sounding like the kind of thing you would watch on a low budget TV drama, complete with inadequate custodial sentencing. More can be found by following the link below for anyone who is interested.

Following these troubles, the site was operated by new owners until it was sold by administrators in 2009. It continued to trade until late 2012 when it was closed, and an application placed to redevelop for residential use. These plans were approved by a planning committee in 2014 but it appears that not much has happened since then.

Our visit

We spotted this as we were passing through Tintern, it is just off the main road. We had just had a good meal and figured we would have a nose about. The hoarding around the building looked pretty secure but the visible condition of the structure suggested that wasn't the case. Once out of the car it was clear that it would be very simple to get into the building. Inside it is pretty trashed and very rotten, though there is at least no evidence of fire. Not a bad wee mooch on a weekday evening.
