The History

I’m afraid I have no Factual history about this place other than a friend told me about it as their mother-in-law lived in the same road. The place has been stood empty for close to 20 years and shares a large plot of land with another empty house, albeit not as pretty as this one. Being a massive fan of the Art Deco styling this is the one that floated my boat.

The Explore

After being given a rough address and location by my friend, I hunted the place down on google earth and found it, although the google earth images where pretty rough. I drove out that way with @slayaaaa & @oakley one night to look at something else and we had a quick look at this. It was early hours of the morning and it was pitch black but this one of the two houses got my attention and I knew I would be going back.
I ventured back in the day light a week or so later and snapped some pictures. The house is pretty much trashed now and from what I can find out its being flattened to make way for some new flats. The inside was stripped apart from the kitchen and bathroom. I loved the curved “Crittall” windows in the corner of the house and the staircase was pretty cool.
Sorry for the lack of information and I hope the pictures do the place justice

I don't think this is pure deco, looks more like an older building made to look like deco. Proper deco had flat roofs. Bath is pretty cool, lets hope it gets salvaged.

That would make sense as the house next to it was a completely different style

On the subject of the Deco houses with Flat roofs, The village of Silver End near me has some awesome flat roof Deco house complete with "Crittall" windows

A lot had pitched roofs added later, as the flat roofs did not age well and had a tenancy to leak! The bath, tiles, staircase and windows all point to it once being a very stylish house!

These houses look dreadful with double glazing, the cool grace of the curves being replaced with a crazy half octagon of plastic...

Crittall they company that made the windows were based where I live. They now make a double glazed equivalent that looked the same.

Lovely house! Imagine what it could look like with a bit of TLC.... Shame if it's to be torn down for some flats to be shoehorned in...

Hi Mockney Reject,

I would like to find out if this is still standing! I'm studying architecture and this Art deco style is just what Im looking for to get images of!

If you do have a 'rough' location I would like to check it out only being in chelmsford myself.

Or if you know that its been demolished?

Thanks! :)

wow love this. What a shame it wasnt restored. Those curved windows, and door frames are or were beautiful. Love the little baloney too. Was the view rural or concrete jungle, ( that can be nice if all light at night )
