There are in total 5 WW2 shelters in Luton and there may well be a sixth. I've been working on this project for years now but its really only in last six months that actually done anything about it. I can't claim to be the first to re-discover these shelters but I do take some credit for finding the exact location for some of them.

To be 100% honest if you do one of these shelters then really you have kind of seen them all as they all get a bit samey after a bit plus everything has long since been stripped out. Having said, looking back, this little project has really been damn good fun, which is what it's all about at the end of the day.

The Moor - A low level cut and cover shelter. Not really a lot going on here and all based on a sort of large rectangle shape.

One of the entrances - only one is still do-able, as found by Southside.

Taking pictures of old electrics, always a bad sign...

This appears to be some kind of wartime radar device. Perhaps something to do with Luton airport.

Town Centre - A deep level shelter. There are two separate entrances to this one which is quite handy as it's totally flooded in the middle so you can only see each separate half of it, unless you being waders I guess. This shelter is about the most intact with some nice remains still in place.

The old street level access. Typically the stairs had been concreted over with a manhole put in place.

One of the toilets, you can just see "Gents" to the right.

The silty yellow shit was very nasty indeed - the smell hung around for days.

And the only polite way out.

Conway Road - Another deep level shelter and has been reported on a couple of time before.

The only polite way in. The deep shaft is common to the shelter in Albert Road (next) and I would imagine must have contained some kind of air purifying equipment.

The short access tunnel to the shaft.

Typically some tunnels had been covered in render whilst others...

I found this in the shelter and scanned it in. I reckon it's circa 1980. Amazing it survived this long.

Phew - last one! I'm exhausted! The Low Town shelter is fucking enormous - I think it's close to being as big as the Shorts shelter down Rochester. The only downside I would say is that it's all much the same, but it really about the experience of being in a space this big, underground. We went on a very hot July day, so it was like diving into a pool of cool water once we were in.

Typically, the air shaft.

Luton brick with the typical "stone" benches.

Another "linking" tunnel, to another set of stair. The echo down here was something else.

Ok, sad macro shot - but we are almost at the end!

Some stairs...

There you go - pick the bones out of that!
