The railway originally terminated at Notabile, at the bottom of the hill on which the town Rabat sits. Following the decision of the British Army to build a barracks at Mtarfa, on the other side of the hill, in 1896 work started on a tunnel which would extend the line to the barracks. Completed in 1900, a new teminus station was provided, called Museum, after the nearby Roman Museum.
After closure of the line, the tunnel was used as an air raid shelter and for mushroom growing, but is now disused.
