I've been rather lazy with my reports so thought I'll post something up from last year. Tone was my first mill and though it's obviously seen better days I thought it still had a certain charm about it. Big thanks to WhoDaresWins for this little jaunt. :)

History

Tone Mill was the last woolen mill in the West Country and was built in 1830 for the Fox Brothers Company. Though originally completely water-powered, the Mill later had an electric motor installed to supplement the water-wheel during times of drought, although the water wheel continued to be used for many decades after.

The works finally closed in 2000 and production was moved to a more contemporary location. Despite being derelict for many years, the mill still has many pieces of the original machinery used as well as cloth and carpet samples.

What was that cone shaped pulley used for?( on the end of the shaft)

The cone shaped pulley is the slave side of a variomatic gearbox assembly to allow the chain drive above to go faster or slower dependent on what they are working on.
