Visited today with Ali23, Stealth and Cavking

In 1830, The Canterbury and Whitstable Railway was at the cutting edge of technology. Known affectionately as the 'Crab and Winkle Line' It was the worlds first passenger railway line and travelled a mere 7 miles.
To follow the most direct route from Canterbury to Whitstable, the line had to pass either over or through the high ground at Tyler Hill. The latter was chosen and in 1826 the world's first passenger Railway tunnel was completed, half a mile in length.
Unfortunately not all of it has survived today as in the 1970s even though the university had been told it was safe to build over a 30m section of the tunnel collapsed underneath it, so most of it bar about 150m has now been filled in, we were quite dissappointed it didnt go further.

Any here are my pics

Here are some decent pictures of the aftermath of the tunnel collapse:

The Cornwallis Building (directly above the tunnel):

Inside one of the (empty) computer labs:

Diagram showing why that was a stupid place to build something:

A careful rebuild:

I went to this Uni in the early '90s, and there are still several parts of that building floor that are distinctly uneven. There's also a few corridors that don't go anywhere anymore.

The south entrance to the tunnel was always rather well guarded - presumably they were storing something vaguely important there in 1994 - but the north entrance (despite being about 50 yards from the main Uni car park!) was very well, uh, "secluded"..!
